Six Types of Molds
Molds can be classified in various ways. Based on the workpiece and the manufacturing process, the six common categories are metal stamping, plastic molding, die-casting, forging, powder metallurgy, and rubber molding. If focusing specifically on plastic molds, there are also six major categories based on molding processes.
Classification by Workpiece/Process
**Metal Stamping Molds:** Used for processes such as blanking, bending, and deep drawing of sheet metal.
**Plastic Molding Molds:** Includes injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming (vacuum forming), etc., used to produce plastic products.
**Die-Casting Molds:** Used to form metal castings from materials like aluminum and zinc alloys.
**Forging Molds:** Used with forging presses to apply pressure and deform metal billets.
**Powder Metallurgy Molds:** Used for the forming and processing of powder metallurgy products.
**Rubber Molds:** Used for the vulcanization and molding of rubber products, such as sealing rings and tire treads.
Six Major Categories of Plastic Molds
**Injection Molds:** The most widely used type; produces items like mobile phone cases and appliance housings.
**Blow Molds:** Used for hollow plastic products such as beverage bottles and fuel tanks.
**Extrusion Molds:** Used to produce continuous linear products like pipes, profiles, and wire insulation/sheathing.
**Thermoforming (Vacuum Forming) Molds:** Used for simple plastic products like food and toy packaging.
**Compression Molds:** Primarily used for molding thermosetting plastics, such as the encapsulation of electrical components.
**High-Expansion Polystyrene (EPS) Molds:** Used to produce foam plastic packaging materials.
