Materials Used in Children Toys

Abs
Abs is the main material for splicing building blocks. The main reason is that it has good dimensional stability, high hardness, and toughness, and is wear-resistant and drop-resistant. The material used in the lego factory is abs. Abs is non-toxic, harmless, high temperature resistant, low temperature resistant, and corrosion resistant, but it does not mean that it can be scalded with boiling water.

Pvc
As far as plastic toys are concerned, pvc is the most used material. Most of the toys (except balls) that need to be inflated are made of pvc, such as croissants, vaulting horses, and balloons. Animal models (children's toys) with both soft and hard feelings are basically made of pvc as the main material.

Pp and ppsu
In toys, pp materials are mainly used in small toys such as gutta-percha and rattles, which can be imported and can be sterilized by boiling at high temperatures.

Pc
Toys made of pc may contain bisphenol a, which is used as material for some cheap toys.

Pe
Specifically, in the application of toys, pe is the most typical for rocking horses and slides, which need to be formed at one time, and the middle is a hollow medium and large toy: For the safety of the baby, the medium and large toys should be formed at one time as much as possible, and the assembled are relatively prone to accidents.

Eva
The two materials, pe and eva, are environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and harmless to human health. The presence of formamide in the floor mat has nothing to do with the material itself, but with the additives in the production process. In the application of toys, in addition to floor mats, eva is mainly used to make foam wheels for baby carriages, as well as some softer masks and water-injected teethers.

Pu
There are basically three types of wheels for our common strollers, such as baby strollers, scooters, balance cars, and bicycles, foam, solid, and inflatable. In addition to evah, the foam wheel also has pu.

Tpr and silicone
The application of tpr (also called tpe) in toys is mainly used in balls, such as crystal marbles, hole balls, aobo balls, etc. In addition, tpr is also used in gutta-percha, but cannot be boiled in boiling water.

Epp
The main feature is environmentally friendly, recyclable, non-toxic, and tasteless. Epp foam material is non-toxic and tasteless, can be 100% recycled, and is a real environmentally friendly foam plastic (ordinary eps material is not an environmentally friendly material). Toys are mainly used in hand-throwing airplanes, square bricks for children's castles, yoga mats, etc.

How to Choose Children Toys

Age-appropriate toys
To ensure your child’s safety, it’s crucial to choose toys that are appropriate for their age. Toys are usually labeled with age recommendations, and it’s important to follow these guidelines. Age-appropriate toys are designed with the developmental needs and abilities of children in mind, reducing the risk of accidents or injuries. Younger children may have difficulty with toys meant for older kids, while older kids may find younger kids’ toys boring and uninspiring.

Non-toxic materials
Children, especially younger ones, have a tendency to put toys in their mouths. Therefore, it’s essential to choose toys made from non-toxic materials. Look for toys that are labeled as non-toxic or meet safety standards set by organizations such as the american society for testing and materials (astm) or the european union (ce mark). Avoid toys that contain harmful substances such as lead, phthalates, or bpa.

Sturdy construction
Kids can be rough with their toys, and it’s important to choose toys that can withstand their energetic play. Check for toys that have sturdy construction and are well-built. Avoid toys that have small parts that can easily break off and become a choking hazard.

No sharp edges or points

Inspect toys carefully and make sure they don’t have any sharp edges or points. Children are prone to accidents, and toys with sharp edges or points can cause cuts or injuries.

No small parts

For younger children, avoid toys that have small parts that can pose a choking hazard. Small parts should be larger than 1.25 inches in diameter or longer than 2.25 inches to prevent accidental swallowing.

Avoid toys with strings or cords

Toys with strings or cords can pose a strangulation risk. Avoid toys with long strings or cords, especially for children under the age of three.

Precautions of Children Toys

1

Choose non-toxic toys with rounded edges
Babies are naturally inclined to explore the world with their mouths, so it’s essential to select toys that are non-toxic and free from sharp edges. Opt for toys like a baby mirror with rounded edges or wooden toys that are not only safe but also tactile and engaging for your little one.

2

Stay away from small objects
Small objects can pose a choking hazard to babies and young children. Always choose toys that have passed the choking test and are large enough to prevent accidental ingestion. Soft balls are a great example of safe and entertaining options.

3

Opt for natural materials
Whenever possible, consider toys made from natural materials. Fabric baskets, soft stackable blocks, realistic animal figures, and rattles that make gentle noises are all fantastic choices. These toys are not only safe but also environmentally friendly.

4

Keep a choking tube handy
To ensure your baby’s toys are the right size and won’t pose a choking hazard, keep a choking tube or a small parts tester nearby. You can easily find suitable options online, such as those available on amazon.

5

Avoid thin plastic and metal parts
Toys made from thin plastic can break easily, potentially leading to sharp edges or small pieces that could harm your child. Additionally, some metal toys may contain harmful substances like arsenic. Instead, consider safer alternatives like wooden blocks and soft puppets.

6

Follow age recommendations
Pay close attention to manufacturers’ age recommendations on toy packaging. Some toys may have small parts that are not suitable for babies or young children. Always adhere to these guidelines to ensure your child’s safety during playtime.

7

Secure battery-operated toys
While we strongly recommend just staying away from battery-operated toys, if you opt for battery-operated, ensure that they have battery cases that secure with screws. This precaution prevents curious little fingers from prying them open, which could lead to choking hazards or exposure to battery fluid, a potential danger for your child.

How to Maintain Children Toys

Plush toys that do not have batteries or special appliques or fabrics can generally be machine washed (we place ours inside a delicates bag) and machine dried on the lowest possible setting. Check the care label or manufacturer’s website to be sure.

How often to clean something depends on how frequently the toy is used, how dingy it looks and if you’ve been in a situation where the toy requires immediate cleaning (e.G. The toy was just tossed around in the sand pit for an hour).

You want to go for scent-free, gentle solutions wherever possible.Vinegar and unscented dish soap or castille soap are great to use.

Diy solution recipe:For general toy cleaning, you can use a solution of 2 cups water to ½ tsp dish soap. Wiping a toy clean with vinegar can also work for everyday cleaning - the vinegar smell should dissipate within a few minutes.

For disinfecting, you can get a nontoxic toy cleaner of your choice or you can make a bleach solution (like what they do at daycare). Personally, I don’t use bleach at home but this is entirely up to you. The homemade bleach solution should never be mixed with other cleaners and the recipes: 10 ml (2 tsp) bleach per 1 liter(4 cups) of water as a disinfectant. The toy will require 2 minutes of exposure time, and can be rinsed or wiped clean after.

Keep toys out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.

Remove batteries from toys if they won’t be used for an extended period of time. It’s good practice to empty the batteries out before storing toys for the next child, or before cleaning.

Don’t expose battery-operated toys to moisture or liquid.

Make sure plush toys are completely dry before use to avoid mold and mildew.
