Key Design Points of Threaded Molds
Thread Geometry
The first step is to define the type of thread—whether it is an internal or external thread—along with the pitch, angle, depth, and other relevant parameters. The geometry of the thread significantly impacts connection efficiency and the product’s service life.
Draft Angle
Since threaded products can be difficult to demold, a basic draft angle is typically applied to both internal and external thread surfaces during design. When determining the draft angle, it is important to consider the depth of the thread and the mold’s structure.

Parting Line Design
The parting line should be carefully designed to allow smooth mold separation during both injection and demolding. Depending on the design (e.g., single-parting or double-parting surface molds), different approaches may be required—especially when threads are molded as an integrated structure to improve product quality.
Rotating Demolding Mechanism
To simplify the demolding process, a rotating demolding mechanism can be incorporated into the mold. This mechanism rotates along with the threaded product during mold opening, allowing the part to be removed without scratches or damage.
Mold Design for Threaded Parts
For external threads: Place the parting line along the centerline of the thread. This is cost-effective but may result in slight imperfections due to the parting line. Consider incorporating a small flat (typically 0.005″) at the parting line to prevent flash development in the thread root.
For internal threads: The parting line is typically not a concern as internal threads are usually formed using unscrewing devices or collapsible cores.
Things to Avoid When Forming Threads
Whether you are forming injection molding internal threads or the external type, you will need resources. Therefore, it is essential to do the job perfectly to avoid wasting your precious resources. Some situations to avoid are as follows;
●Do everything you can to follow the right procedure to avoid cross-threading. This can ruin the previously well-formed threads.
●Monitor the process closely to avoid loose ends on the thread,
●Avoid forming corners that are too sharp at the thread’s end.
●Avoid distorted edges at the thread’s tip or root.
