A total of 286 side core holes in the core are processed by a horizontal CNC machining center. There are three sizes of side holes: 12mm, 8mm, and 7mm, all of which need to be matched with the side core pulling. The processing accuracy is high. The processing sequence is: first use a center drill to determine the center position of the hole on the inclined surface of the core, then pre-drill the bottom hole, and then drill the bottom hole and then ream the hole. In order to ensure that the size of all reamed holes is uniform, a special plug gauge is made to check the hole size and roughness at any time.

The inner core pulling assembly adopts 22 concentric fan-shaped oblique spokes, which are composed of a core, a core pulling rod screw strip, and a core pulling rod fixing strip. The core pulling rod is modified from a forming ejector to ensure full penetration. The outer conical surface of the screw bar and the fixing bar for the core pulling rod must match the inner conical surface of the core, and the inner conical surface must match the outer conical surface of the core pulling rod. The processing technology is difficult. Two options were considered at that time:

 

(1) After the core pulling rod assembly is prepared separately, the dynamic matching conical surface is processed on the CNC machine tool with a tool, and then all 22 core pulling rod assemblies are assembled by a fitter. After the core pulling rod assembly is fixed with a tool, the fixing holes of each core pulling rod are processed together with the core.

(2) All core pulling rod assemblies are regarded as a closed conical ring. After the inner and outer conical surfaces are machined, they are assembled with the core and the core pulling rod and the fixing holes of each core pulling rod are processed together. Then the 22 core pulling rods are divided into 24 sections by wire cutting. Combining the advantages and disadvantages of the above two options, the second option was adopted. This option greatly reduces the processing difficulty of the core pulling rod assembly and maximizes the smooth realization of dynamic matching accuracy. The cone ring is machined by vertical lathe instead of tool clamping, and CNC also reduces the processing cost. The core pulling action of the core pulling rod assembly is smooth and stable during use, and the dynamic mating surfaces are in good contact.

 

Processing of deep narrow ribs of cavity inserts: Advanced CNC EDM can be used to change the mold insert structure to an integral structure, thereby simplifying the structure and reducing the amount of workpieces in mold manufacturing. In this pair of molds, there are many narrow ribs on the concave mold inserts, and the narrow ribs are machined by EDM, which has been fully applied to this pair of molds.

In EDM, in order to avoid the change of size caused by electrode loss, electrolytic copper, a special electrode material for EDM, is used. This ensures the processing accuracy. In the process of processing, in order to polish the narrow ribs on the side and control the processing depth, the EDM machine tool is specially equipped with accessories such as a horizontal head, and the method of flushing oil is used to help chip removal. At the same time, in order to obtain a smaller surface roughness and higher productivity, the electrical standards are reasonably converted, the rough and fine electrical standards are selected according to the actual situation, and graded processing is implemented. After processing, the side roughness of the narrow ribs is ra=2.5-0.63μm, which greatly shortens the subsequent bench polishing time.

 

The mold should be considered uniformly and comprehensively during the processing. First, determine the two sides of the entire mold frame as the reference surface, then use CNC milling to process the main inclined locking surfaces and convex core fixing holes of the fixed mold part, and process the main dimensions of the convex core on the CNC milling machine, while ensuring the position accuracy of the center of the convex core. The four sliders should be welded into one and processed at the same time to ensure their mutual accuracy, which provides a strong guarantee for the assembly of the mold.
