Mold for the front trim cover of the second-row seat
Characteristics and development trends of the automotive interior and exterior trim mold industry
(1) Automotive interior and exterior trim components
Passenger vehicles generally consist of four major parts: the engine, chassis, body, and electrical equipment. The vehicle body itself is typically composed of the body-in-white, interior and exterior trim components, and electrical accessories.
Automotive interior trim components (Interior Systems) refer to vehicle parts that possess decorative, functional, and engineering attributes. They comprise several major subsystems-such as dashboard systems, side trim systems, soft trim and acoustic systems, seating systems, and occupant restraint systems-and perform functions like vibration damping, thermal insulation, sound absorption, and noise isolation, playing a crucial role in vehicle comfort and safety. Furthermore, factors such as the materials and manufacturing quality of interior trim components determine the vehicle's market tier, serving as a key element in the positioning of mid-to-high-end passenger vehicles.
Automotive exterior trim components (Exterior Systems) refer to parts located on the vehicle's exterior that provide protection, decoration, or opening/closing functions, as well as external accessories with independent functions. These primarily include components attached to the vehicle body via bolts, clips, or double-sided adhesive strips-such as front and rear bumpers, wheel arches, grilles, radiator covers, and protective side moldings.

(2) Automotive interior and exterior trim molds
Automotive interior and exterior trim components encompass a wide variety of parts. Commonly used materials include various plastics, composite materials, and surface skins or fabrics, with plastics and composites playing a dominant role. Consequently, the molds used for these components are predominantly plastic molds or composite material molds.
Because various interior and exterior trim components are located in specific positions on the vehicle body and differ significantly in functional requirements, structural characteristics, and appearance, the molding processes used for their respective molds also vary widely. Currently, molding processes for these components include injection molding, compression molding, blow molding, extrusion molding, and specialized molding methods for fiber-reinforced composite materials.

(3) Market Demand and Future Development Trends
In the automotive component manufacturing process, producers must manufacture initial parts based on specific vehicle models using molds as primary tooling-supported by automated assembly equipment-and subsequently inspect these parts using specialized automotive checking fixtures. Consequently, the three aforementioned product categories are highly customized; they require close coordination and cannot be reused across different vehicle models. When vehicle manufacturers develop new models or facelift existing ones, they typically need to redesign the vast majority of interior and exterior trim components, requiring upstream mold suppliers to custom-develop the corresponding molds.

Generally, depending on the specific configuration, a single vehicle model requires one to three sets of interior and exterior trim molds and checking fixtures to produce the various trim components; the number of molds required varies based on the design complexity of the trim and specific molding process requirements. In recent years, global economic growth has led to rising consumer expectations regarding vehicle performance, aesthetics, and personalization. This has resulted in a proliferation of vehicle models and shortened development and facelift cycles, driving sustained market growth for automotive interior and exterior trim molds and related products.
The development of the automotive industry, along with the demand for mold replacement driven by new model development and shortened facelift cycles, offers vast growth potential for the automotive interior and exterior trim mold sector. Furthermore, trends such as the premiumization of automotive consumption, vehicle lightweighting, and the expansion of the new energy vehicle industry provide significant opportunities for the continued development of this sector.
